Picking Out The Perfect Pair

Soccer boots

Spring is almost here and that means playing soccer the way it was meant to be played; outdoors on fresh cut grass with the sun beating down on you. I have nothing against playing indoors. I enjoy it also. But the playing field definitely adds a lot to the game and nothing beats playing on a well-groomed pitch.

It is important to pick the appropriate cleats for the field on which you’re playing. This is especially true when playing a competitive game where attention to the seemingly insignificant things set you above other players. It is funny how very small adjustments can have profound impacts.

When picking out cleats for a specific playing field, the most important thing to look out for is the type of outsole. This is the part that makes contact with the field.

Firm ground cleats are the most common and versatile. They are designed to provide traction when playing on natural surfaces (i.e. grass).

Soft ground cleats are good for wet, muddy pitches. They usually have metal-tipped and detachable studs.

Hard ground cleats are used for hard sun-baked grounds or frozen fields. They have many short studs distributed evenly across the bottom.

Turf cleats usually have rubber outsoles. The studs are also usually made of rubber.

Indoor cleats also have rubber outsoles. They have no studs and are made flat. They are well suited for playing futsal.

Spring Bike Ride

SPRING_Bike_Ride_Plain

Hey Guys, it’s Spring! The snow has gone (well, almost!). It’s time to pull out that bike, grease the chain, and get ready for a ride. Join REAL MEN Sunday, April 13th @2:30PM. We’ll be meeting at Williams (at Pier 8) and going for a leisurely waterfront ride to Dundas and back. This 25km route will also include a mid-ride stop at Cafe Domestique, where you can purchase lattes, cappuccinos and lunch.

It’s going to be a great afternoon on this scenic ride on a waterfront trail with a great pit stop at this cycling-themed cafe in downtown Dundas.

Fishing In Hamilton

brown trout

As our city grows and competition for good fishing increases, it may seem like we have to travel farther and farther to enjoy what once was available right here on our own doorstep. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. There is still great fishing in Hamilton! The piers at the Burlington Canal offer some of the greatest fishing I have ever encountered.

Recently, I fished there and had great success, as did many other anglers at this convenient venue. We landed some BIG sheephead, salmon, brown and rainbow trout. Some of these were in excess of 15kg!

2013 was, supposedly, a slow year for fishing there. REALLY? I am so looking forward to 2014. It is such a great and inexpensive way to spend an evening. The views are spectacular and there is plenty of room. There are people of all ages and they are friendly and accommodating and the fishing is world class! I was able to learn a few tricks of the trade and now I can fish there both day and night.

Hey, if the fish are willing, so am I. Are you? Head down and check out the fishing.

It’s all in the Flex!

Phil Kessel Snapshot

Picking up from where we left of in my last post, what are some things to consider when purchasing a new hockey stick? Price point, a one piece or a two piece stick, material, flexibility, grip versus clear finish, blade pattern and curve, durability, length, weight…

The list goes on. For this post we will focus on one consideration, flexibility.

So what is the flex of a hockey stick? It is a number that indicates the amount of pressure in pounds that is required to bend the center of the stick an inch. So in order to bend a 100 flex stick an inch it would take 100lbs of pressure. Why does flexibility matter? Have you ever heard the term, “Work smarter not harder”? The whipping action in a stick, that its flex creates, will put more speed in your shot with less effort. Now that’s smart!

For anyone who watches hockey, you are probably aware of Phil Kessel’s infamous snap shots! (as a Leaf’s fan, I may be a little biased). Watch closely next time for the slow action replay. You will see a ridiculous amount of flex on his stick. It is common to see forwards use the flex in their sticks for the quick snap shot, or wrist shot. On the other hand, defense will commonly have stiffer (less flexible) sticks.

There are some other things you will commonly see in a defense man’s stick which we will talk about in the next post.
