In a few days, the biggest single-event sporting competition in the world will commence. Brazil will be host to the 20th edition of the FIFA World Cup Finals. The competition has come a long way since its inception in 1930. The first edition, aptly christened the inaugural edition, was held in Uruguay and involved only 13 teams. The road to this year’s competition involved almost 200 teams battling to be one of 32 teams to compete in the finals.

Here are 5 interesting facts you may or may not know about the World Cup:

  1. The official match ball for the 2014 FIFA World Cup is the Adidas Brazuca. The term ‘Brazuca’ is used by Brazilians to describe pride in the Brazilian way of life.
  2. Pele is the only player to have won the cup three times.
  3. With 210 goals scored, Brazil are the most prolific team in the history of the competition.
  4. Maracana stadium, the host of this year’s final game, holds the record for the biggest attendance at a sporting event in an enclosed stadium. 199,854 was the crowd number for the Brazil vs. Uruguay match in the World Cup Final on 18th of June, 1950.
  5. “All in one rhythm” is the official slogan for this year’s World Cup.

Bonus fact: The fastest goal in the FIFA World Cup was scored 10.89 seconds after kick off by Hakan Şükür of Turkey.

‘Get Reel’ Fishing Derby Recap

The first “Get Reel” fishing derby is in the books.  We had just under a hundred anglers come out and enjoy a fun day of fishing with friends and family on what was the first beautiful sunny day in May.

Before the park opened its gates there was a line up of cars with eager anglers ready to find a spot and wet a line to kick off the derby.  Anglers from as far off as Toronto showed up to fish in the derby.  It was great meeting and talking to many at the derby.  A lot of smiles and laughs were had throughout the day.

The target species was crappie. One angler, however, kept catching perch.  Unfortunately perch did not count towards the draw prize.  He had a great sense of humor about it though.  Towards the end of the derby, with the hot sun warming up the water,  the crappies finally turned up and a few anglers managed to catch a mess of fish with minutes left in the derby. Thanks to our wonderful sponsors, there were many prizes to give out. It made for a great atmosphere.  Some anglers who won multiple prizes showed great generosity of spirit by giving some away to the younger kids who were not so lucky.

I would like to thank everyone who participated in the derby.  We look forward to seeing you at the next one.  A big thank you to all the volunteer staff who made the day a success.  It would have not been possible without you.  Lastly I would like to acknowledge  our wonderful sponsors who donated the prize that were given away.  Bills Bait and Tackle, Boston Pizza,  Bennett’s Apples and Cider,  Marcie’s Cookies,  Binbrook Conservation, Fishing World, Frosty’s Fish and Chips in Dundas, and Living Hope Christian Assembly.  Thank you for your support.

Spring Bike Ride – April 13

Spring Bike Ride - April 13

Finally! Some great riding weather. It was a sunny 20 degrees with a light breeze – great spring weather for a good ride. Lots of guys made it out for the 25 km waterfront ride from Williams at Pier 8 to Dundas and back. Good to see lots of new faces joining us for the ride.

We stayed on hard top all the way, so even the nice road bikes could make it. Some mountain bikers wanted to go off-roading around the Spencer Creek mark, but we held it together to make it to Domestique Cyclo Cafe, in Dundas, to refuel on food and drink and some good laughs. Great time hanging out there, and we really appreciate Krys and his staff at Domestique coping with 40 guys all showing up within a half hour. They did a great job.

Looking forward to getting out again soon. Some guys are talking about road biking, others about mountain biking, and some about getting our older kids out for a ride. Check back for more details of other rides and remember, it’s Bikes’N’Burgers in September!
