Chedoke School Bike Drive

It looked like it could have rained on Thursday afternoon, April 25th.  But that wouldn’t have stopped REAL MEN – we simply would have moved indoors.  See, we had a mission:  we were there to hand the bicycles, that we’d spent so much time and effort these last few weeks fixing and polishing, to some deserving kids at the school.

Well the rain held off, at least until it was time to pack up!  And that afternoon we gave out 36 bikes.  Each of the recipients also received a generously donated new helmet, and a little on-site TLC to make sure both bike and helmet were properly fit and in great working order.  We also found ourselves in a position to give 4 other children a brand new helmet.

Does helping out with a REAL MEN bike drive sound like something you’d like to do?  Get in touch with us!  No experience necessary, all you need is a heart to serve!  And for those 40 kids, volunteers with that make all the difference.

REAL MEN at Mission Services

At REAL MEN, we love our city.  And we love to give to it.  Sometimes that means we give of our time, to serve others.  That’s what these fine gents did this week.  With ever-increasingly busy lives, and on a holiday weekend to boot, they still found a slice of time to don green aprons and help at Mission Services. It is so simple a thing to give, and yet it means so much more to those served.  We’re proud of you, guys!Resized-20190421-165852.jpg

Why We Fix Them Up

Here’s a quick vision of why REAL MEN spends so much time in the shop before our school bike drives.

If you have a bit of time, and a heart to serve, those are the ONLY requirements!  The know-how can be taught – the desire to help is already a gift you have.  And at REAL MEN, we help equip men to use their gifts for others.

The Fix-ups Begin…

REAL MEN HAMILTON has some big plans to serve our city in 2019.  Among the first is a bike drive, for deserving kids at Chedoke School, coming this April.  We’re already hard at work:  every bike donated undergoes rigorous cleaning, fixing where needed, polishing, testing, and inspection.  Though we take bicycles in any condition, we feel that these kids should be receiving top-of-the-line product.  And if all it takes is some time and honest effort to make that happen… well, none of these REAL MEN will argue that it’s a high price to pay!

If you want to help, we can use you!  No previous experience or know-how needed!  We’ll always take donations, and if you’d like to be hands-on during a fix-up session, you can learn the ropes (or chains?).  Get in touch with REAL MEN, and let’s put some top-knotch bicycles in some top-knotch hands this spring!

Merry Christmas

It’s important to remember at this time of year that all of the festivities, all of the celebration, all of the decorations and gifts and joy – they all happen because one man came to serve others.  That’s the heart of each and every one of us at REAL MEN.  So whether it’s handing out some hot apple cider at Jackson Square, or serving a dinner to someone without at Mission Services, REAL MEN is here to serve our city.  Today is a wonderful reminder that we have been given a wonderful example to which we aspire.  Merry Christmas from REAL MEN HAMILTON.

REAL MEN’s Own Honours Fallen Firefighters

We at REAL MEN are proud to say that our members have a heart to serve.  That’s why we’re especially proud of our own, Eric Savard, who recently undertook an arduous cycling adventure from Toronto to Ottawa, to raise funds and awareness for the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation.  This charity honours and remembers firefighters who gave their lives in service, by fundraising to provide for the surviving families, through scholarships, bursaries, financial funeral assistance, and more.

What follows is Eric’s own recollection of the trip…

“It was challenging, but keeping focus on the end goal is what kept me going. The middle portion of the ride had a 1200 m gain in elevation over about 40 km. Then the next day, more hills coming out of Kingston. We departed from the Toronto Fire Training Facility in Scarborough at 7:30 and arrived in Kingston at 6:30, for a first day of 263 km. We stopped every 90 minutes of riding for a 10 minute stretch and hydration break. I consumed my own homemade energy sports gels to fuel my body with sufficient carbs and electrolytes: 18 g carbs every 30 minutes. We left Kingston at 7:30 the next morning and arrived in Ottawa ahead of schedule at 3:45. Our average speed for both days was 28.7 km/hr, we rode the last 80 km at 32 to 35 km/hr. On the Sunday we marched to the memorial (450 m) and we attended the ceremony where 20 families were presented with fire hats, handed to them for the first time by our Prime Minister.”

The reason for the ride is to raise funds and awareness to the Canadian Fallen Firefighter Association. which has erected and maintains a memorial in Ottawa. The CFFA also provides counseling at a camp for 5 days, available to the grieving family of a deceased firefighter. Also, funeral financial aid is available to the families of the deceased firefighter who died in the line of duty, there is also an education fund available to the spouse and children.

Bocce By The Bay

Sometimes it’s just about good fellowship!  On Sunday Sep 16th, REAL MEN had an unofficial Bocce ball tournament by Hamilton’s harbourfront.  Let’s face it, we’re out to make a difference and show some love in our city.  But you also want to know the people with whom you stand, and there’s no better way to do that than with a little fun and friendly competition.  The relationships we have with each other are just as important as the new ones we forge with our events.  REAL MEN is committed to creating these awesome opportunities to both connect and develop meaningful ties with both new people in our community, and with those who may have been here some time, but haven’t ever been a part of something like this.  From that perspective, does it really matter who won?  (specific answers as to who won will vary depending on who is asked)…
